Tithes and Offering: If You Want To be Rich!
Giving perfect tithes and offering is the only Biblical way of welcoming God’s protection and blessings over your income! Despite knowing what the Bible commands on this matter of tithes and offerings, very few Christians give the “whole” tithes to their local church.
On offerings, the majority of Christian believers give an offering that is not perfect like Cain’s. God is not in need and doesn’t require us to give tithes and offerings to sustain Him! He created the whole universe and everything belongs to Him.
“The silver is mine and the gold is mine,” declares the LORD Almighty in Hagai 2:8.
God only requires your tithes and offering so that He may bless your income and also protect the remaining 90% from the devourer!

What are tithes and offering?
A tithe is 10% of what the Lord God gives you. Ten per cent of your overall income is what God requires from you. He gave you the 100% but only requires the 10% as protection for the 90%. Giving the 10% tithes can’t seem like a big deal until when you have the money in your hands. Un-budgeted for and other financial needs arise and you are tempted to offer 1 to 5% tithes which are neither perfect nor the whole tithe as God requires in Malachi 3:10.
Offerings, on the other hand, are gifts that you offer as your heart (not your head) leads you. As a Christian filled with the Holy Spirit, it is God’s heavenly wisdom that will guide you into deciding what you should offer to God as a gift appreciating His love and mercy towards you. Thus, the name freewill-offering.
Instances in the Bible about offering“In the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering – fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favour on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering, he did not look with favour. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.”
genesis 4:3-5
Later on, Cain killed his brother because of jealousy.
The key thing in this tithes and offering scripture, you should train yourself to give the “best only” to God. God honors and blesses the one who gives out of a willing heart. When you give the best out of what God gives you, you will feel the parting pain, and in this pain is the faith that God is the Giver and He alone deserves the best and not you.
Why won’t God bless you abundantly when you give Him the best out of what He has given you? Of course, He will bless you. And thus, offering the whole and perfect tithes and offering is a sure way of becoming a rich Christian!
Another offering scripture is seen in Mark 12:41-44
“And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury; and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”
The poor widow, just like Abel, gave God the best offering she had. She believed that God is able to provide her next meal. The key tip to take home: faith is the key when offering to God. When you live a life of total obedience to the WORD of GOD and carry your cross daily to follow Jesus, you will be blessed when you offer the perfect tithes and offering to God. The peace that surpasses human understanding is one blessing that the Lord will give you and you will be contented with whatever He gives. Thus, you will be rich!
mark 12:41-44
While there are many instances of men and women of faith who gave a perfect offering to the Lord and were blessed, instances of cursing like that of Cain are seen too. For instance, Ananias and Sapphira sold a portion of their possession and gave an offering that resulted in their deaths. They lied to the servant of God, Peter that they had brought the full proceedings of the possessions they sold to the Lord. They both died on the spot!
While there are blessings and abundance in tithes and offering, you should be very keen not to be filled with lust and lie to the Holy Spirit and die physically, spiritually or both.
Things that happen when you give incomplete tithes and offering to the Lord:
- You fall under God’s curse for breaking His covenant by robbing HIM. (Malachi 3:9)
- You rob food from God’s house contributing to a lack of the needy. Malachi 3:10a
- You shut the floodgates of heaven and God’s blessing from you. Malachi3:10b
- While you may continue receiving your income, it will not be 100% and it will not benefit you or your family. Malachi 3:10c.
- You fall under judgment like Cain, Ananias, and Sapphira.
- You invite poverty over your head and family.

Things that happen when you give the whole tithes and offering are as follows:
- You become blessed for obeying God’s word and keeping His covenant.
- The house of God will not lack and neither will you nor your family.
- God will open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so many blessings on you that there will not be room enough to store it.
- God will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before they are ripe.
- You will become visible to all the nations as blessed and a delightful land.
- God will provide for you and you will become rich and content and the whole world will know God is with you.
Thus, the title of this article, “If you want to be rich…” isn’t clickbait but a Biblically proven fact.

If you still want to be rich…a whole and perfect tithes and offering is a must!
As a Christian, I have been in situations where I failed to bring the whole and perfect tithes and offering into the house of the Lord. The aftermath of the hard-hearted incomplete tithes and offerings is always regretful! You can’t rob God and walk scot-free. He is the JUST JUDGE! The majority of Christians suffer hard economical times when God, who is the Jehovah Jireh-our provider, has promised abundant richness through His Son Christ Jesus.
Since He is the Just Judge, you can rest assured that He will be just when you obey His word on tithes and offering.
As a Christian, you may go through hard times financially but as long as you are blameless in your tithes and offerings to God, He will come through for you.
What does the Bible say about tithes and offering?
What is the difference between tithes and offering? The tithe is the 10% of the total income that the Lord gives you and an offering is your free-willed gift to the Lord as your heart leads you. In both tithes and offerings, you should be willing to have faith so as to give.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
It goes on…
“As it is written: ‘they have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.’ Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us, your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”
2 Corinthians 9:9-11
In this epistle, the Apostle Paul encourages the Church in Corinthians to be a cheerful giver. In these encouraging words of wisdom, if you are keen enough, you will notice the following key highlights of tithes and offering:
- When you give generously you will also receive generously from God.
- Don’t give reluctantly but only give what you have purposed in your heart to give.
- God loves a cheerful giver so you should give cheerfully without grumbling or complaining.
- When you give whole and perfect tithes and offering to God, God will bless you abundantly, so that you will abound in every good work, lacking nothing in all things and at all times. You will be full even in times of financial distress and hunger!
Also…
- The offerings are also used to help the poor in their needs and also to evangelize the Word of God to the nations. As you offer your gifts to the poor, your righteousness will also endure forever as they give God thanks and intercede for you.
- God who supplies the seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.
- The Lord will enrich you in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion. This will result in thanksgiving to God.
How to give the whole and perfect tithes and offering to God; step-by-step guide
Giving the whole tithes step by step
Who was the first person to pay tithe in the Bible?
“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought bread and wine. He was the priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise to God Most High, Who delivered your enemies into your hand.’ Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”
Genesis 14:18-20
- Have a record of what God gives you so that you can be exact in calculating what He has given you. The 10% tithes is a percentage of every income that you receive including and not limited to a few cents. Having a daily record is the best practice and I recommend this to be a working formula.
- On your daily record, you will be in a position to tell if you can give your tithes on a weekly basis each Sunday or on a monthly basis. If you are a business person, you should aim to offer the tithes each Sunday after calculating the losses and profits. The 10% tithes should be a percentage of the profits since this is what the Lord has given you.
- Give the best notes and coins to God cheerfully without reluctance. Avoid the old notes and coins and give the best to God, cheerfully.
- Let this be a covenant between you and God. Always set the tithes aside before you budget for the 90%.
- Don’t be concerned with how the Pastor will use the tithes. Play your part and leave the rest to God.
Give perfect offering step by step
“So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks”: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for they son. For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did ear many days.”
1 Kings 17:10-16
- When giving an offering to the LORD, God and His servants should come first and you and your household the second.
- Faith is what comes into play when giving an offering to the Lord. Don’t withhold the best like Cain, give by faith like Abel and the widow of Zarephath and God will reward your generosity.
- Give what you purpose in your heart. The Holy Spirit will speak to you through God’s word or through His servants. Be keen and walk in the Spirit and you will able to distinguish your thoughts from the thoughts and voice of God.
- Never appear before the Lord empty-handed. Give as the Lord helps you to give. Deuteronomy 16:10-17.
- Give to the Lord cheerfully and joyfully, ensuring you only present the best offering to God.
Conclusion to tithes and offering
Being rich as a Christian shouldn’t be termed as sinful. While it is easy for the rich to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for them to enter heaven, being rich is among the blessings God made available to those who believe in Him. Since silver and gold belong to God, it is no secret that God wants to bless His obedient children with wealth so that they will in turn help the widows, orphans, and the needy in the Church.
